The 90-Second Rule

Tuesday, April 5, 2016

Did you know that emotions only have a shelf life of 90 seconds?

Yup, it takes us longer to brew a cup of coffee than our brain to effectively get rid of the very emotion that was overtaking our whole being just a short two minutes ago. Whether you feel anger, guilt, anxiety or doubt, those emotions can be easily controlled and diminished before they have a chance to affect you on a deeper level.

According to Erin, the trick is to simply acknowledge the negative feeling, stop whatever you’re doing and breathe for 90 seconds. By letting the oxygen in and focusing on the breathing itself, you distract your brain from chatter. Plus, this rather basic practice gives you something else to focus on, so your brain doesn't have a chance to make up wild theories or stories of ifs and hows.

Nip it in the bud, I say:) Will you give it a go? (I've been doing this for the past week and I think it works).

P.S: On being fully present in the moment and everything about my headspace :)
P.P.S: Do you get stressed?
