Are you a morning person or more of a night owl?
Over the summer, Deniz interviewed me about my morning routine and all the little (and more private) bits and bobs that come with it - including my go-to breakfast recipe for overnight Bircher muesli.
It's a bulletproof mix, a healthy and delicious breakfast that gives your metabolism a jump start to the day. It will also keep your kidneys and gut happy (and inflammation free), and create the perfect base for whatever you’re planning to eat later in the day. It’s like a bandage you put on before going for a bike ride (and by bike ride I mean drinking wine, eating fried foods or indulging in something heavy or overly sweet).
So below is the recipe for a single serving. Make it tonight and enjoy it the next morning on the way to work or by your desk straight from a jar.

Overnight Bircher Muesli
(Recipe adapted from Joss Herd via Red Magazine)
- 3 tbsp rolled oats
- 1 tbsp flex seed
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- 1 tbsp bran
- 1 tbsp organic milk
- 1 tbsp organic apple juice
- 1 small organic plain yogurt
- 1 tbsp honey
- 1/2 Granny Smith apple, grated
- some chopped nuts and fresh seasonal fruits to serve
Place the oats, flex seed, chia seeds and bran in a bowl and pour over the milk and apple juice. Stir in the yogurt, followed by honey and the grated apple. Cover and place in the fridge for at least two hours , although the oatmeal will happily sit in the fridge for two of three days. Serve scattered with the chopped nuts and fresh fruit. Ta-dah!
