When life gives you lemons...

Monday, March 24, 2014

...you make lemonade but in our case it's more like 'when life gives you a sick dog you give your Rome trip as a gift to your mom and her husband'. Yup, this Thursday Balazs and I would be heading for an 8-day vacation to Rome. Sadly, a few weeks ago when Buffer (our 12 year old Westie terrier) got diabetes that requires daily insulin shots, we had to change our plans for the sake of the sick pup. Our vet + tons of different dog boarding places said it’s not a good idea to leave him right now because of a stress induced diabetic seizure that comes with his condition. A change of environment can trigger it since he is older, set in his ways and very attached to us. Plus, we didn’t want to burden our friends with such a responsibility, so after countless days talking about it and making lists, Balazs and I decided that we treat my mom to a great vacation that we so thoughtfully planned. Honestly, Balazs is heartbroken because he put so much time and effort into getting everything organized and your tips helped him so much in setting everything up from the hotel, museum passes, flights and even a few restaurants we wanted to visit.

So, sadly Rome will have to wait for now...but as soon as my mom returns, I will write a post about which hotel we booked because it seems really dreamy. I just first want her to see it before recommending it to you.

Now, do you know what would make me feel better? If you told me about your upcoming trips…I would love to know where you're heading this year? xoxo

Diana what a shame but I can completely understand your decision. It’s incredible how much our pets mean to us and how much they need us to care for them. Does he get shots ever day? Do you administer them or does the vet? As for us, we are going to visit family in England sometime in July but nothing concrete yet. Jill

Oh Diana, I'm so sorry to hear about Buffer and your trip not working out as planned! It's so hard, especially when your pet is so loved. Toby and I have two older cats, who both require medication. It makes leaving for vacations rather difficult. At least someone you love dearly is going on a fantastic vacation and hopefully you and Balazs will get to go to Rome very soon! xo my dear!

Diana- sending positive thoughts to your pup and much admiration for your dedication to his health. So admirable!!! You and the hubby should treat yourselves to an extra lovely night on the town to hold you over until you're able to plan another trip. Hugs... xox, m

Oh Diana, you have such a big heart. I am sorry for your dog but he has the best parents in the world because you love him like your child. We live in Switzerland so we have seen most of the iconic cities in Europe, so now we are planning a trip either to the US or to Mexico. We still haven't decided because we want to combine a beach holiday with a bit of sight seeing. Have you ever been to Mexico?

I've been in Fiji, so only just catching up :/ This really tugged at my heart. You're both such lovely people and I'm sure your mum appreciates this gesture. Thinking of Buffer xoxox

Well, it's obvious just how much you guys love buffer. What awesome doggie parents. Rome wasn't meant to be right now for you two......just imagine how much more you'll appreciate t when you DO go. and your mom is going to love you even more for this. ;) hope buffer starts doing better. our hound just turned 14 and has a condition called larpar for shot (larygeal paralysis for long). Plain old rotten disease that make it hard for him to breathe. we'd do anything to make it better, which currently includes special visits to the holistic vet (not inexpensivc but so far so good). the things we do for our furry friends. we'd be lost without them.

Oh no... I'm so sorry to hear about Buffer and your trip. Such a shame. I know how excited you were.

My trip plans are mostly to the States this year. We're getting married in June so time and money means staying in London till our honeymoon in September - still undecided between Costa Rica, Hawaii and Kenya. I'm planning to be home in NY for Christmas and other than that and probably a few work trips to Boston, it's a quiet one for me!

Awwww I'm so sorry to hear this. I hope that you can fit in a mini vacation sometime soon (maybe with Buffer). And what a special gift for your Mom, hopefully you can visit Rome some other less stressful time, in the near future. Sending good thoughts your way!!

OMG...I am so sorry to read this! But I'm also blown away by your generosity and commitment. Life will give you 1000x times back. I'm sure of this. You know, life can only be understood backwards, but can only be lived onwards. Much love to you and best wishes to Buffer and the rest of the family!

Diana, I am so sorry that you & Balazs are unable to go on your trip. I am sure that by giving your mum & her husband this wonderful opportunity on taking this trip, you will be given much more back in return. Sending lots of love to Buffer :)

I'm sorry to hear you are missing your trip, but I applaud you for being kind, responsible, generous humans to Buffer. Not many people would put the well-being of their pet before a trip like that. It speaks highly of you and Balazs. Plus, it's such a wonderful gift for your mom. I'm excited to read about her adventure :)
No trips in the near future for me... just sitting in front of a computer at work and finishing up my master's degree in social work. I might go to the coffee shop today though, so that's exciting :)

OMG Diana how sad, my heart aches for you guys.
But how sweet are you to gift it to your mama.
I think you get the best daughter of the year award.
I hope your beloved pup knows how much you love him.
Take care.
