A Nightly Dinner Out That’s Like Therapy

Thursday, October 3, 2013

Have you read this little article in The New York Times recently? It’s one you shouldn’t miss as it will bring the biggest smile on your face. It’s about the dapper gent above, Harry Rosen who lives in Manhattan. He is 103 years old but doesn’t look a day older than 90. Best part? He eats a fancy dinner out every single night of the week and he usually orders a fish and a glass of chardonnay. He calls it his therapy. He enjoyes getting dressed in his best suits after which he takes a yellow cab and heads to one of his favourite fine dining restaurants in the neighbourhood. All the waiters already know him and on his arrival, they escort him to his usual table. Even though Harry is not looking for attention, since he eats solo, he often gets chatted up by fellow diners which I find very sweet and incredibly heartwarming.

“It’s my therapy, it lifts my spirits.”

The whole article gave me a huge grin. How wonderful would it be to bump into him one of those nights? Maybe even share a meal? The one thing for sure, next time Balazs and I are out and about, I'll be thinking about Harry:) How often do you eat out? Weekly, monthy or just on special occasions? xo

P.S: Happy at 100 and on eating alone.
P.P.S: And this little challenge:)

(Thanks, Kristian. Photo of Harry by Dave Sanders)

You always find the nicest stories to share. This made me very happy and I'd love to share a meal with Harry. My husband and I eat out ever Friday night. It's our date night. Jill.

It's people like that that inspire me to be cool when I'm older.

thanks for sharing this.
My MIL refuses to eat alone and is embarrassed by the thought of be in a restaurant alone since losing her hubby. I think that it is good for you to get out and jump in to the world moving around you to get out of the thoughts in your head.
We hardly ever eat out anymore, with our food allergies and a special needs child it is impossible to. I miss it sometimes but really enjoy our dinners at home around the table now.
