Human Towers

Wednesday, August 21, 2013

Blimey, once every two years the city of Tarragona in Spain transforms into the Concurs de Castells aka the most important human tower competition in Catalonia. The contestants take this very seriously since it’s one of the most important cultural traditions where people have a chance to showcase team-work, strength, balance and courage. On the day hundreds of men and women in teams attempt to build human towers. The higher and more difficult structure they come up with, the more points the team gets. Every human tower is usually between six to ten levels high. Teams are made of between 100 to 500 women and men.

Mind-blowing, don’t you think? Have you seen anything like that before?

P.S: Plus, Holi festival and lantern floating ceremony in Hawaii.
P.P.S: Midsummer night in Poland.

I've never seen anything like this. What a fascinating tradition and I am just now wondering how strong those people must be to hold one position for such a long time while others keep on climbing up on top of them. Jill

This tradition is from my country! As a usual reader of your blog I have to say I am so proud of "Castells"(literally castles)!
However, the exact term for the Tarragonian competition is "Concurs de Castells" in catalan language, the oficial in all Catalonia, where Castells are typical of, not Spain!
Well I just can say, I love them! :)

Hi! i found your blog i don't remember how... but i love it! I'm from catalonia and i'm a castellera (castle woman maker) I LOVE IT!
for the base it's necessary the strongest mans of the group, helped by the rest of people, on the body, we use womans and mans who keep them together by her own hands just, and that part it's so important cose made the visual body. On the top, the lightest people, our child. the braviest i can say. They use security helmets and i know its irracional say this but if the castle falls, they are the latest perjudicied people cose the fall over the head of the body and base, so are the most secure part...
Maybe it sounds crazy, but it's a grat tradition on every part of the family can work hard with all the group. Come to see us soon, we hope you like it :)

Congratulations for your blog ^_^
