A Grown-up Gap Year?

Thursday, November 1, 2012

Would you be brave enough to take a grown-up gap year? If yes, where would you go? Eek, ever since I read an article about a sweet London couple who totally took a chance and left everything (including their jobs) for a whole year to fulfill their travelling goals, I’ve been daydreaming about where I would go.

May and her partner started off their adventure in Hong Kong, then they went on to Sri Lanka, Thailand, Laos, Bali and a few other magical countries. They said that the best part about going for a trip like that when you are older is that you can really connect with all the different cultures and understand them on a totally different level. They especially loved being part of all the spiritual events and didn’t mind getting up at 3 am to attend some of the local traditions.

Doesn’t that sound amazing and a bit frightening? What places would be on your list? (I would choose: India, Bali, Iceland, Italy and Thailand and spend 2 months in each country). xo

P.S: How about travelling solo?
P.P.S: Holy smoke!

Logistically, I'd need to save more money than I can even think would be feasible.
In my dreams, I'd go to the Bolivia salt flats, South America, East Europe and India. How wonderful that would be!

This is a wonderful idea! How cool to get utterly soaked into a culture! I think it's awesome! I'm also a big fan of traveling alone. Though I haven't done it. Lol!

I so need one of those (gap year vacations) I hope I can make it happen in the next few years).

I would go south, a spend a semester in Costa Rica rainforest, enroll my kids in the cloud school and I would do some trail building. After that, Japan, climb Mt Fiji. India and the rice fields, Bali for some downtime. Istanbul for visiting grandparents. A few European countries and then the summer in a cottage on a lake, before restarting. (Um yep, thought about it before)
ps. I would also go to where ever that 2nd photo was taken, that looks romantic and festive.

If I could I would in a heartbeat. Not sure I would mind where we went as long as they were places different from where we live currently.

my husband and i had an unintentional gap year (where he did different internships and i basically didn't have to work the entire year!) and we fell in love with scotland/UK. we would love to do it again but just had our first baby so our travelling will be on hold for a few years until all our kids are born :)

This sounds like an amazing year. I would visit Scandinavia and the Pacific islands. I go to Tierra del Fuego in Chile and all the up the Artic Circle. But it does sound terrifying. My husband and I want our daughter to take a year off to travel before or after college.

I am really tempted to take a gap year after uni as I didn't take one before. Does this count as an adult gap year though?! I'd love to go to Thailand as well. And do a massive roadtrip across central America as I've never been x

That's really awesome! So many people are stuck in their routine and forget to live. Do they have a blog or website about their travel?

This is such a brilliant idea and I wish it for everyone at some point in their lives.. traveling is always such a welcome perspective shifter... what amazing inspiration!

Diana Mieczan said...

Patricia, that is such a good idea! I would love that for my future kiddo too.

Diana Mieczan said...

Totally, Polly:) Btw: a huge roadtrip is always a must!

Diana Mieczan said...

Basia, unfortunately May doesn't have a blog or a website. She was interviewed for a one-off magazine feature.

We took a "gap" year in 2007 with our 4 kids in France . . . but we still live here! Now I want to do it again and homeschool them while we travel around to other countries. Someday!

I would explore the Mediterranean: Spain, the French Riviera, more of Italy that I haven't seen, Croatia, Greece, Malta, maybe some spots in North Africa... ahhh, what a lovely time that would be.
