First Date Tips!

Wednesday, August 29, 2012

The last time I was on a proper first date was a whooping 12 years ago - eek! How about you?  So when yesterday night I met up with my single and gorgeous friend, Olive who I used to work with years ago, I was all ears to hear about the little dating tips that are popular nowadays.

Back in the day I used to follow two first date rules: never an intimate dinner, as it can get super awkward. I loved going for 'drinks and sides' - like a hummus plate and a cocktail or a cheese plate and wine. And the second: always meet at the agreed spot, as first time 'small talk' can get really uncomfortable, especially in a taxi!

Well, here are two of Olive's last night tips that I loved: always get drinks that you can drink with a straw as you have too much to worry about already and smudged lipstick shouldn’t be on that list. And the other one is that dinner at the bar makes first date less intense and more social. I like that!

Lovelies, your turn: what are your first date tips? When was the last time you went on a first-date with someone new? How was it? I’d love to know. xo

P.S: Also, a few dating moves and a snazzy date-night outfit:)
P.P.S: Plus, table phone talk and  how to avoid lipstick faux pas.

I've only been on one first day! We went to a movie, and I didn't want him to feel awkward, so I said he could bring a couple of his friends if he wanted (i knew all of his friends). He ended up bringing like 4 guys...hahaha

Oh well, we're together 6 years later, so it wasn't a total bust.

Our first date after we decided we were a couple was to our high school's choral concert. It was nice because we didn't have to make small talk, we just chatted a little bit after it was over.

Those tips are awesome. To be honest, I haven't been on a lot of 'first dates.' I love the drinks and sides part and if I get to choose the place, I always looked for a cozy place with a nice ambiance. The last first date I had, with my bf, was at Miami's Van Dyke Cafe http://www.thevandykecafe.com/ If you check out the place, you will get my point. Great post darling! XOXO

Holy God, I just realized I haven't been on a first date since October 2003!! Uh, I have no idea. Back then there was no FB, no Twitter, minimal googling the person's name - which usually ended up in zero results. Wow. I miss the anticipation of a first date. :)

Kristi, that is so sweet and totally lovely that you wanted to make him feel comfortable by suggesting that he should bring his friends for the movie. Love that and congrats on 6 years:)

The anticipation and the exciting butterfiles of a first date are so cool, aren't they, Natasha? That was one of my favourite things about first dates. Mostly, I used to walk to the agreed spot so I have the time to just relax, breath and enjoy the butterfies:)

Oh first dates, it has been a bit of time for me as well, though I'm ready now to enter back into that world in a new city! I love how you enjoy a first date of drinks and sides...so perfect! Also, Olive's advice of drinking through a straw is a lovely one, great tip! :) I agree with making them be at a place where you can talk and get to know each other, but also be around people and keep it a little casual and fun!

Oh! My first date was nine years ago. Hmm... My first date tip is don't hold hands. Way too intimate. My now husband tried to hold my hand on our first date and I not so casually slipped it out.

Great Post! As I'm going on first date this weekend, thanks so much for the tips! Especially sitting at the bar makes it less formal. I was also thinking a 2nd date we could go for a hike? Or does that lead too many awkward silences... I guess I could always comment on the forna? Lol.

Goodness it's definitely been one too many months since my last... Do you know any lovely suitors? ;)
Great tips!

Liesl, you'll have the best time going on dates in the city! Have fun, lovely:)

Uhh,I like you tip a lot, Tiffany and I totally agree that holding hands is very intimate:)

RJ, thanks for the link. I am going to check it out right now. Also, stephiy88, have the best time on your date this weekend. How exciting! Btw: second date hike sounds wondeful and casual. If you like him on the first date and you think that you can talk comfortably around him then a hike is a great idea! xo

Your tips are fabulous...

My first day...I wore a fresh, white sundress...to a wedding, that my date was serving in...
Just a kiss, is what ended it...
He and I were dress perfectly...
I married him and it is going on 32 years! I was 16 then. Ha ha now you know about how old I was...
I married him 6 months after.

32 years? That is amazing, Lena. Congrats!
