Travelling Solo?

Thursday, March 29, 2012

This July our good friend is embarking on a month long solo-travel. Last week he came over for dinner and we chatted about his plans. The whole trip is a gift from his wife for his 40th birthday. Isn't that sweet? Since that dinner I’ve been reading up a storm about the subject as it totally hit the spot for me. In his teens and 20-s Balazs travelled-solo all the time. He went to the UK, Australia and around the US. Elizabeth Gilbert did it for a year in hopes of self-discovery and Jenny Diski does it because it gives her the freedom that she desires.

The one sentence I keep on stumbling on while reading about the subject is that there is a huge difference between travelling solo and travelling alone. It has to do with the state of mind, being comfortable in your own skin and simply letting go and embracing everything that comes your way. Interesting, isn't it? (And so tempting at the same time to try your own limits and truly spend time with yourself).

I’m curious what you, my darlings think about the subject. Have you ever travelled solo? Would you? If so, where to? (I would probably go to Ireland). xo

If you fancy reading more on the subject here are a few cool articles to check out:
* Three great solo travel destinations.
* Tips on going solo.
* This book looks super interesting too.

P.S: Also, my challenge this year: solo dinner dates.
P.P.S: A few swoon-worthy spots.

My stepsister-in-law has traveled all over by herself. I found it so inspiring and intriguing - but now that I'm married I can't imagine doing that, I just want to share all those experiences with my husband!

I'd definitely travel solo. I have in the past and it's quite lovely.

Traveled solo for a month last year! Went to the UK and basically just roamed around and met the most fascinating people. I want to go back and do it again. I love traveling alone. It's one of life's greatest pleasures.

I would love to think that I have the confidence to do that but I don't know that I do.

I traveled solo in Italy and France and must say it wasn't for me. I met people along the way but I feel I'd had enjoyed it much more with a pal.
Regardless, I had a lot of fun and it was nice to go wherever I wanted.

Fashion, Art and other fancies, you are so right. I be it can be totally cleansing and Monica, that is a good point. I think that solo-travelling has two sides to it. Btw: Italy and France? It had to be magical:) ...Did you go to Florence?

How awesome, Barbara!!! If I ever go, I am totally asking you for tips! Thanks.

I have never traveled solo to another country for leisure, I have tried it for business trips but it gets lonely when the meetings are over ...

i'm not sure how i would manage alone, but i would like to think i could handle it. i think i'd just have so much more fun with someone else.

What a sweet Birthday gift your friend is getting...love the idea of exploring something by yourself, where you will probably learn more about yourself and be inspired! :) Also, solo vs. alone really does give it a whole new, more empowering spin...love it! <3

I have mostly ever traveled solo, for my big trips. I spent a year backpacking and working in bars across the UK on a working holiday visa, totally solo. I backpacked Spain and much of Europe alone. I did Shanghai and Singapore Solo. And while it would have been nice to share those moments, I loved it. I met some wonderful people in hostels; a few of whom are still close friends of mine!

I haven't traveled solo yet. I was thinking I was gonna be traveling solo this summer, but my friend is coming with me now. But I'm planning on it the next trip. It would be so fun to just go and meet people and do crazy things and experience life as it gets thrown at you.

Last summer I went through a breakup and decided the best way to rediscover my equilibrium was to go back to London (where I had lived/studied in school). I took myself back to England for two weeks, traveling by train up to Northern England for a weekend, seeing one of my favorite musicians play a show, and back to London to explore my favorite city in a whole new light.

It's exhilarating and wonderful... Highly recommend it!

Eliza, how awesome. All those places sound so cool and Singapore is beautiful, isn't it?

Lauren I adore what you said - "It's exhilarating and wonderful"

Btw: I love London as well. Each time I visit, I don't want to leave.

I've traveled alone around Asia for 8 months, and loved it! There is beauty in the freedom of doing what you want, when you want. I've just returned from 1.5 years around the world with my husband, and at times I missed not having to compromise! :)

Travelling solo is my favourite way travelling! It really gives you the solitude we all need sometimes and help you rediscover yourself.
