One thing this year: Solo Dinner Dates

Tuesday, January 3, 2012

This year instead of making New Year resolutions (and breaking them), I decided to challenge myself with only one thing that is totally out of my comfort zone but something I wanted to do for a while now - eating solo.

Remember a while back I told you about my favourite dippy eggs solo-dish? I always eat it when Balazs works late and dinner is all on me. So, from this month I have a plan to take the whole eating alone concept a step forward and dine alone at some of my favourite restaurants around the city.

The thing that gave me the last push was this article and Jay Rayner (the food critic) who shared his take on solo dining. He says that as with any other solo pursuits, eating alone requires a carefully balanced combination of commitment, enthusiasm and self-adoration. It should, after all, be a meal with someone you love. Hell, if you go out for dinner by yourself and discover you don't like the company, you really are in trouble. So you need to be in a good mood. The best part? When eating alone you have a licence to snoop. Eavesdropping on the next table’s conversations, people watching and having a little dinner-date with yourself can be pretty awesome, if you ask me.

Lovelies, what do you think? Fancy giving a go with me? Have you already had a dinner-date with yourself? How was it? What are your New Year resolutions? xo

P.S: Another great tip: if you are not comfortable with booking a table for one, you can always book for two and on the spot just simply say that after all it will be just you today :)

I love eating solo. Noone to talk to whilst eating is good. One can concentrate on chewing properly. LOL.

My MIL recently told me she has never eaten alone, my FIL passed this year and she can't even bring herself to do it.
Me on the other hand never thought twice about it, I would go to movies alone, a dinner alone shopping alone.
I sometimes still long for a day just alone.
I think it is refreshing :)

When I ventured to Scotland alone I HAD to eat solo. I hated it but loved it at the same time. Weird, I know. It's liberating but people do look at you strange.

I like finding things I enjoy doing alone when Shawnie is still at work or out doing something on his own, too.

Ohh Amy, I'm sorry about your FIL and I totally agree, it must feel totally refreshing to eat and spend a day solo:)

I love this! Thanks for the push. My husband also works late sometimes, and I haven't worked up the courage to dine alone *in public*... another thing I get nervous about: Going to the movies alone. But I may just DO IT! Who cares?! xo.

It is surprisingly an amazing experience. I used to do this all of the time when we lived in New Zealand. Matt and I worked in different restaurants at odd hours, so on the nights he was working, instead of sitting home alone (we didn't have a TV or anything, and hadn't met many people yet) I ventured to nearby eateries and ate by myself. Sometimes I would bring a book or a magazine, sometimes I just sat and thought and drank my wine and other times I made friends with those sitting next to me. I say go for it!!!!

i hate hate hate eating by myself. seriously if no one is home i just don't eat. it's such a social thing for me. but i have to get used to it sicne i'm moving to spain and don't know a single person. so i either have to learn to enjoy eating by myself or starve!

brilliant! i think every woman should have at least one thing, reserved for herself only. it should be one's need, in my opinion.

A great goal! I've been to the movies on my own and eaten out many times. During the day, there are more people going solo at the movies than there are groups/couples. I find a book or notepad is great for jotting down inspiration while eating. And of course, my camera always. Does it count that my dog is lying by my side at the table?!!

Diana Mieczan said...

Nicole, I need to do that too. I think, as soon as we start feeling a bit comfortable with the whole thing, it will get super easy and totally enjoyable. Keep me posted about it all:)

i'm definitely planning on doing more solo activities, including a trip overseas later in the year. i think it's nice/important to do things on your own sometimes :)

Nicole Marie, Spain? Oh my goodness, how fantastic. I bet you will LOVE exploring that amazing country. Good luck, sweetie.

I need to do this more often! I'm fairly good at treating myself to a movie by myself, every once in awhile, but I don't dine alone very often! As a single girl, or anyone in fact, this could be quite fun! Plus I love people watching!

Hope you have a blast when you give this one a go!

Living in a new city means I do lots of meals and events my myself, but I think it's pretty empowering and kind of enjoyable at times, so don't be nervous!

Diana Mieczan said...

Sj, your trip sounds super fun. Which country/s?

Diana Mieczan said...

Christianna, I LOVE people watching as well and TheChambrayCountess, thanks, sweetie!

I don't mind eating solo when I have no other option BUT it does take special staying power I think. I seem to always end up at low key restaurants with really good hamburgers for some reason!

Good luck for your dining endeavour!

i actually travel alone for work and i do this all the time. i think of it this way: i get to eat wherever/whatever i want and i get some time to just reflect and relax. i am the constant pleaser and entertainer and this way i get a break.

Chapstick Fanatic, that is such a great way to look at eating solo - a little break to relax and enjoy:) Love that.
