Ushanka: Thumbs up or down?

Thursday, November 3, 2011

As a small child I remember my partly Russian grandparents wearing ushankas during snowy seasons and thinking how stylish they looked. My grandma had a few favourites that she only wore for special occasions & they all had a little precious jewel attached.

So as the weather is cooling down fast, more and more girls, especially in Europe opt for ushankas instead of knit hats as they add that extra va va voom to the outfit. I'm not sure if I could ever pull off this look, but bravo to the ladies above for looking so romantically-mysterious. It's as if they were straight out of an old James Bond film :) Lovelies, would you be brave enough to wear an ushanka this winter? xo

P.S: More autumn/winter trends: tomboy style, elbow patches and oh-so adorable cozy tights.

I picked up a faux fur hat from Target last weekend for $20. It's cheap enough to give the style a whirl!

I would love to be able to wear one, I think they can look so chic! But I also think they're better suited for people with long hair....which means I'm out....

I LOVE them but I can only wear them when my hair is straight. they would totally mess up my curls.

Thumbs WAY WAY WAY up. I love this look so much. The only thing that could make them better? Ear flaps.

I love this look so much more than the sloppy wool hat, if only it were cold enough to wear one here. There's a sliver of time in Dec. and Jan. when it's possible--so maybe I will get one. How lovely that you have such wonderful memories of your grandparents wearing them. I love the idea of special ones with jewels!

At this point it would be extreme overkill here in Cali to wear one! But I love the look! Maybe if I lived somewhere colder?

These ushankas look so warm and cozy but I definitely couldn't pull it off. I think you really need panache to pull this off.
