Heavy Load

Thursday, September 8, 2011

How powerful are those photos? Two brilliant photographers, François Vaxelaire & Eliane Beeson wanted to make a tribute to the Congo’s Carrier Women and share their story with the world. They took hundreds of portraits of them while they were carring their load that is as heavy as 1-2 tonnes on average. Incredible! I find those images truly striking, powerful and sad. Darlings, how about you? xo

One or two tonnes? That is heartbreaking and those photographs are very powerful. Thank you, Di.

Very moving. It makes me feel ridiculous complaining how heavy my grocery bags are to carry in from my car, ridiculous. I will remember these beautiful hard working women and count my lucky stars.

that is amazing that these women are able to this
i am sure that is what they have been brought up to do and know no other way of life, but it is still such a hard life

Those are some seriously strong ladies!! Suddenly my ability to lift 90 lbs on the hip adductor machine at the gym doesn't feel like much of an accomplishment now. :-P

This is amazing. I love it. Where do you find these things? It's not an uncommon sight in the village in Colombia where I'm staying either.

Look at this photo I took - it's not on a person, but still a heavy load :) http://www.etsy.com/listing/81354059/bicycle-travel-photography-colombia-8-x

Steph, how interesting. So you can see carrier women on the streets in your village as well? Btw: that photo is BRILLIANT! Thanks for the link.

I felt the same when I saw those photos for the first time, Jeanette. They are truly incredible.

Beautiful, sad, and amazing. Women in Papua New Guinea (where I'm originally from) carry things like that, too.
