Eating Alone?

Tuesday, July 12, 2011
My darlings, what are you reading this summer? I'm almost done with Alone in the Kitchen with an Eggplant: Confessions of Cooking for One and Dining Alone. It's a funny, witty and totally heartfelt collaboration of twenty-six great people from foodies to writers, men and women, all edited beautifully by Jenni Ferrari-Adler. Each of the contributors let us in on their secret meals they make for themselves when no one else is around. The whole book feels like an honest celebration of food!

I often felt bad telling people that my choice of meal for one is eggs. Sometimes I would go for ham and eggs, sometimes for dippy eggs and soldiers but always with tons of sweet and spicy sauce. Then Laura Calder reassured me that I'm not the only one who eats weird when I'm alone: “People lie when you ask them what they eat when they are alone. A salad, they tell you. But when you persist, they confess to peanut butter and bacon sandwiches deep fried and eaten with hot sauce, or spaghetti with butter and grape jam."

So Sweets, how about you, what do you eat when you're all alone? What are you reading this summer? Any recommendations? xo

Ohhh, I am so pleased you posted about this!!
I read an article in 'Easy Living' magazine by some of the contributors to promote the book -
It occured at just the time when I was absolutely dreading eating alone as I was travelling to back to my lonesome univeristy house when all my fellow students had returned home for the summer to work my part time job - this article practically changed my life and I now embrace eating alone.
I would actually love to read the book... :)
Thanks for the post! It's brightened my dy infinitely. x

what a Coincidence! I think that eggs are the best and easiest thing to cook when you eat alone, and right now I reading "twelve men" by Youssef elsebaey (he's an Egyptian writer)

Diana, this sounds like an amazing book. I must grab a copy next time I visit the online shop. I always cook even for just myself. I usually make spicy food when I'm alone because Emma can't have curries and I love that stuff with flat bread and white aromatic rice. Ahhh! I am dreaming now.

pasta "cereal": pasta (normally macaroni or something tubular) with butter and skim milk. my great grandmother always used to make it for me and it is totally comfort food now.

I love healthy side dishes.

For the most part when I'm eating alone, I eat healthy, and mostly it's veges and fruit, but it's usually a side dish. Yesterday I had steamed brocolli and a cup of fresh mixed fruit. Today its string beans and potatoes in a tomatoe sauce with lots of pepper, or curried up. Tomorrow a sweet potatoe in the microwave. However, I will usually have half a turkey sandwich at times for lunch, and sometimes bread and jam when I'm not in the mood for cooking or Plain Greek yogurt and honey or cerial.

A nice title that got me here to comment.

I love that book! We've got it at the library where I work and it's a great read. : )

Eggs are a perfect meal for one, I poach them and put them on toast or a portabello mushroom or on top of a salad. They're also good fried in a messy sandwhich with cheese + HP sauce - yum!

I'm about halfway through Susan Juby's The Woefield Poultry Collective (aka Home to Woefield in the US) and so far it's BRILLIANT. Hilarious and totally charming, a perfect summer read.

I eat lunch alone almost every day because I work from home. I'm also an egg gal and cheese paninis. I leave the grill out on the counter at all times. It's fast and yummy. There are times of weakness when I'll grab a spoon and a jar of Nutella :)

I need to find this book- sounds delightfully charming!! I know lots of people who eat eggs when alone. I will be brave and admit that my secret solitary meal is popcorn - just salt, no butter.

Let's just say that I eat almost anything when I'm alone, haha. It doesn't really matter to me what I eat when alone, because I'd love to fill my tummy with good food, regardless of company. ;)

My summer will be spent completing my thesis paper! It's due in a month's time, and I just can't wait till it's over and done with. :D

Have a lovely day, D! x
