Dolce far niente

Monday, July 11, 2011

Do you remember Eat, Pray, Love the movie? There is a scene where one of the Italian friends explains the true meaning behind "dolce far niente" - the sweetness of doing nothing as we would say. For a while now I am on a mission to add a bit of blissful laziness to my working days. At first it was hard to just get up and leave what I was doing but by now I’m really looking forward to those five minute coffee breaks, half an hour Friends reruns and a few minute walks in the park. Strangely enough with a little effort I feel so much more productive and happier!

So, darlings, want to join in for a challenge of dedicating a few minutes each day to the sweetness of doing nothing? Are you in? xo

I'm starting to think it's not only enjoyable, but necessary! Life has bee flying by so quickly, it's time to just sit and do nothing and feel time pass, just to try and slow it down a bit :)

italians just know how to live! the break in the day from 1-5 when we eat and siesta is so crucial to staying relaxed, happy and stress-free. it is then that i get all my great naps and reading time in and i think without it i would be much less at peace. :)

I so remember that part of the movie. It struck a chord in me and I've been trying to do a bit of that every single day since I saw that movie. The Italians know how to live, don't they?

Hope your week is off to a fabulous start, sweetie! xoxo

Yes, we are incorporating this into our lives too! We actually took a little 30 minute nap this weekend, something we never use to do. It was heaven :)

I have mid-morning naps almost every day, does that count?

LOVE this! Reminds me of this quote by J.M. Barrie: "You must have been warned against letting the golden hours slip by. Yes, but some of them are golden only because we let them slip."

Ah, nothing. It's everything you could ever hope it could be.
I love getting outside for my short breaks at work. it's so refreshing to be breathing air and getting sunlight.

It sounds like a great idea in concept, but the one time I had tried this, I ended up stressing myself out trying to make time. It was work trying to make time...I know, I'm a lost cause.

I would love to join you for this and do remember that scene in the movie...lovely!

Loved that movie and I love what you are doing. It probably does make a person so much more relaxed and happier to just take a half an hour to sit outside in the park, take a walk, read from a book, watch some tv...instead of running around like crazy, on the phone, on the computer. Sounds like something everyone should do.

Hope you are enjoying your day...sounds like you are :)

I'm so in! Having tea in the afternoon makes my work day so much easier because I take it to the rooftop deck and spend ten minutes relaxing. Love it!
