Let's Chat: Work - Life Balance

Tuesday, April 12, 2011

Darlings, have you seen the movie Julie & Julia? I just had a chance to watch it a few weeks ago and I can't stop thinking about it. First of all, incredible acting by Meryl Streep who plays the iconic cookbook writer Julia Child and Amy Adams who embodies a Brooklyn-based girl with a dead-end job who decided to change her life with a challange of cooking all 524 recipes in Julia Child's cookbook within one year. But besides that, the movie is totally inspiring and thought-provocing! I'm not a great cook and mostly I leave it all to Balazs but this movie was much more to me than a bold cooking challenge. It was a little glimps of how hard it is to balance everything in our lives like family, dreams, goals and timing. You could truly see Julie's struggles and that's what made her so real to me.

So, darlings, I would love to know your secret to work/life balance. How do you do it? Do you have it all figured out or you're still working on it? Is is stressful? Did you choose to go with your dreams or the more realistic option? Let's chat and please be honest! xo

My secret is I do things for myself when I am out of work. Whether it sit on the couch and be lazy or make a huge dinner. Plus, I make myself take a vacation every few months. Lucky for me, I really enjoy my job and don't always see it as "work" so that makes it a lot easier. I try and set up fun things on the weekend too and get outside since I spend most of the week indoors.

I love this film so much! It cheers me up and inspires me! I love Julia and think she has her work/life balanced perfectly!
Though, I have no pointers yet.. I am still wanting to know the secrets of it all myself!
Wonderful post! xxx

You're right and this is a great movie, by the way! There's a ton to be said about work/life balance. I'm a single gal, but I still have a ton of responsibilities in life. I think you have to set specific times for each part. You have to prioritize and give yourself a couple minutes out of the day to think about that.

Hope you're having a great week! :)

It is a constant struggle. I'm lucky because I have a very understanding husband (and vice versa) but it definitely is something I'm constantly striving for...the right balance, and giving enough time to everyone in my life.

Work - life balance is hard!! Ideally, you have a job you enjoy, and don't mind dedicating time to, but we all know that isn't always the case. I think it's especially important to find a balance when you have a significant other, a family, and/or children. Those people need to know they are important too!

I definitely did not take the realistic option, and I have not quite figured it out. However, I am definitely enjoying myself trying!

my secret is my super supportive husband.
He is my all and allows me the time to do what I love and helps me in every way to achieve my dreams. and yes, thank goodness he is the cook in our lives, LOL otherwise we would starve.

I definitely don't have it all figured out! Hardest thing for me is finding a balance between my life and my blog. I love my blog and want ti put a lot of effort into making it wonderful, but at the same time I can't let it take over my life and interfere with important daily tasks. I think it's all a game of give and take. One night I'll really focus on my blog and another I'll do something fun with friends/family.

I love this movie too. I have to say I am TERRIBLE at the whole work, life, blog balance. Everything blends in a big blur and I fear that I'm not really enjoy much of any of it. My goals for 2011 is to stop and smell the roses.

Winging it is my only secret so far...depending on the day its a constant juggle with kids, demanding work, hubby, house, blogging and any other random things that pop up. I 'try' not to beat myself about not getting it right all the time. keeping 'the guilt' in check is key for me.

It is definitely hard to keep a balance between work, life, and everything else that comes in between. As much as possible I try to separate work from my outside life. After office hours I try not to think and even talk about anything that is work related. I pretty much spend my time with my mom, family, the boyfie and cooking. I hardly ever have some "me" time. At times I can't help but think that 24 hours in a day is just wayyyyyyyyy too short.

Love that movie first off, hubby got my Julia's cook book for our first Christmas, as a joke.
But for balance...I suppose I've taken the more "practical" route. But I try to free myself up, allow myself to have a lazy day - a day to spend with friends, enjoying the small things (like a mid day nap, a shopping trip, etc) to maintain my sanity. Plus it helps to have an insanely awesome husband who keeps me grounded & having fun!
Great post!

It's not easy having a job that we all like. But we gotta live - pay the rent, etc. But if you find that thing that you love doing and get paid to do it, then go for it.

love this movie! i have a wonderful job that allows me to leave at 4:30 every day, so i don't have too much trouble making time for life around work.

I loved this movie so much! I'm at a point right now where the only thing that matters to me is my marriage. Since we're still newlyweds, it's easy to just focus on that. But I'm in transition career-wise and have yet to embark on my entrepreneurial dreams, so when that starts happening, I'm going to have to figure out a balance. Luckily, I think it will involve a lot of my husband helping me make it happen and I'll have my in-laws in the same city to support me. But we'll see in 6 months how I'm faring!

I love that movie too! Amy Adams is so cute. And I loved to see the story of how Julia Childs came to be.

I have no balance. But if you're not out there living, what is there to blog about?

Anna Walker said...

I uhm, definitely take time to myself, outside of school, and now that i'm looking for a job, then I guess I will learn how to balance all three!

I work full time, have a boyfriend two hours away, try to maintain my blog and am taking graduate classes. I ALWAYS feel like I'm missing something. But sometimes, you just need to take a day or even a few hours where you just let yourself be unproductive. My biggest problem is being too hard on myself.

Sarah said...

Oh no, I am yet to watch this movie. But all I've been hearing about it is that it's inspiring perhaps a million over people out there to start cooking!

Right now, a student life balance is already hard to manage. Can't imagine what I'd be struggling with in a couple of months time after I graduate. x

Main topic of mine as of late is if you're an artist/creative of any kind for a living you better love it because it will be your life, have to make the time to be balanced, I take bits of time throughout the day...

At the moment the work life balance is crazy, but mixing it with what I love makes me very happy. Xxxx

christine donee said...

Oh gosh.. if you ever figure out the secret, please let me in!

I think it's a working balance. Sometimes something will work, and other times a different balance is needed as your life and schedule changes.

But good grief is it a challenge!

Haven't seen the movie yet, but must sort it out.
I have recently changed my life completely by jacking in a 9-5 job that I detested - it made me miserable (for no new job and no money yet) . Now I am LOVING my newfound joy of life, my energy levels are up, I'm a better mom, and I now know what to look for in a job and what not. My husband is slightly worried:) but I'll get there - scary though. Since I've started blogging (recently) this have opened a whole new world to me, and I love it - I have met such inspiring people, and hope I will find myself something to get on with, will let you how I fare :O)

Constant struggle! Hubs works in the US Senate and I work in the global headquarters of a HUGE company - which means we often don't get home til 7:30 or much later at night.

Our solution - we email a few times during they day, and then make dinner TOGETHER, eat it, and snuggle. Every moment we are free, we are pretty much together -- which makes the struggle how to deal with single friends.

We always feel torn between wanting to be together, but not making non-coupled friends feel out of place....now what is the solution to THAT?

LOVED, LOVED, LOVED This movie too, we saw it a few months ago and I think Ive watched it two or three times since then! Its just so inspired and you're right its much, so much more than just cooking. Julia Child's life is an inspiration, Julie the writer's life is an inspiration.

It def can be a difficult balance at times and Im learning along the way, slowing at times! There is no secret because everyone has their own style and their own way of dealing with things.

I had a job doing something I didnt love and something I didnt go to school for...and now I am writing for the wedding blog full time and I love it and Im so grateful every day for it, for my husband and my step children and my life. But there are some days where you just have a bad day, or maybe a bad week...but you pick yourself up and keep moving! :)

I've had this film on my kitchen counter for about 3 weeks now. I need to watch it. As for having it all figured out, I definitely dont

I wish I knew the secret to that. Balancing work and life is hard enough, but now that I've got a family...well let's just say I admire what every parent before me went through.

Maybe I will see the movie for some guidance in the work/life balance area! It's tough for me right to find the balance ... w/ kids and a full time job & part time childcare for the babe. eeks! I have a 1 year old assistant. Which I love, but guilt and work is piling up. Add in home upkeep, dinners fun w/ family and time for myself. I think some perspective and spontaneity and knowing what is really important helps.

I have Julia's cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking. It's a lovely cookbook full of recipes that make for good times drinking wine in the kitchen. Loved the movie too.

Isn't striking the perfect balance the hardest thing about life??? I still haven't figured it out...there are still days where I wonder if I actually accomplished *anything* and other days where I check off a lot of things on my list, but the things that are most important got a little neglected...the best thing I've found is being able to let it go...all the expectations and standards of "success" are kinda a bunch of crap. I just have to do what make me happy (c: Which, I will admit, is kind of a crap answer, too (c:

It was much easier to draw the line when I had a full time corporate job. Now that I work for myself, it's harder to juggle because there is always something I could be doing!!

Diana Mieczan said...

Letting go....sounds great, Aubrey and I totally know what you mean, quintessence. Its much harder when you work for yourself. There is always something to do:)

definitely still a work in progress. i need to build up the courage to not worry so much about a steady income. it's hard though, i like seeing money go into my account every fortnight!

Oh, I do NOT have it all figured out...
but basically finding out what makes me happy (harder than it looks!)and following that is a good guide...

have been meaning to see this movie -- must do!

What a great dialog to start! My strategy is to always be present in whatever it is that I'm doing at the time. When I'm at work, I try to rarely procrastinate and just get things done. When I'm doing personal life stuff, I focus on enjoying the company I'm in or the activity I'm doing (and I'm usually able to do this, since I worked my butt off in the office!).

I loved this movie too, Diana!! The real Julie has a real blog TODAY now and it is here

http://juliepowell.blogspot.com/

It's a very neat blogging story, right? I love Merl too. She is my favorite. And I also love that she is married to a sculptor. She is a true artist.

How do i find balance? Hmmm. I think making time for myself is the best way. Having children has made me more efficient, so that helps. Every spare moment is a carpe diem moment--so that helps! :)

Caroline of Salsa Pie said...

I meant, I love "Meryl" too. :))

Great movie! Meryl Streep can do no wrong.

Regarding life, it is a balancing act and sometimes, everything just topples over. I'm still working on the many roles I play.. now including wife and novice cook to the mix. I've learned to stop and think about all the things I am grateful for. That keeps me going when nothing else can..

Vanisha said...

I'm going to have to go get this movie! I've never really made a distinction between work and life. I guess the sort of work I do and my life style are really supported by each other. My husband is the same. We don't make the distinction and it's working really well. It helps if you're madly in love with what you're doing :) The comments here are really amazing!

I LOVED that movie as well. It was so adorable and really stuck with me.

I certainly don't have life all figured out. It is a process. Each day has it's own challenges and victories. I certainly couldn't do it without God. Right now, in my life, I couldn't be more satisfied...I'm 40, married 14 1/2 years...I did the career thing & got TOTALLY burned out.

Today, I'm blessed with being able to be a stay at home Mom with my first baby. Life is GOOD!

What about you, Diana. Are you "living the dream?"
Love,
Heidi

Umm, there is very little balance in my life, because I pretty much do try to have it all: The money-making, benefits-providing 9-5 job; the fun, now part-time but hopefully one day full-time librarian job; my side business making jewelry; the husband; the house; the dog; the social life (this admittedly suffers sometimes); and hopefully kids one day, too, though once that happens I know I'll HAVE to find balance. But as stressed as I get sometimes, I wouldn't have it any other way. :-)

always a good topic because people seem to be so busy these days. i have to say, i'm kind of selfish and make myself a priority!

Amanda Swann said...

This has actually been a constant struggle for me since my 1st was born 5 years ago. I was working in a very high stress job that required me to be away from my family a lot. After a lot of tears shed, and knowing to my core that my family comes first, I decided to stay home and be a mom for a while.

Part of me starting a blog was for me to find myself again. I needed to figure out what I am passionate about. Every day is a work in progress. Some days I need a break (yesterday). My hope is that I'll find my passion and be able to do something with that.

Great topic by the way. Sometimes I want to know how everyone else seems to juggle so much.
