Home Inspiration: Open Shelves

Wednesday, February 16, 2011

My mother-in-law says that you can tell a lot about a girl after her kitchen. So if she's right, I'm a chocoholic who drinks way too much soy milk and has every possible cook book on the planet! Anyway, for a while now I'm thinking about adding an extra open-shelf-unit to my kitchen and display all the food jars and mugs we have but I worry that it won't be too practical. Dears, I would love to ask what's your experience with open kitchen shelves? Do they gather up tons of dust or become totally messy? (I love all those huge cookie jars above). xoxo

P.S: Few more cool kitchen projects!
P.P.S: Stay tuned for GIVEAWAY Wednesday... (fancy a new pair of spring shoes?)

i love open shelves! i literally just posted about my new tiny desk shelf! i think they would gather dust but the fact that they are open would make me clean them more, unlike cabinets. i think they are beautiful and would totally put them in my future kitchen.

we have a long wall with open shelfs in our kitchen because I cannot stand these usual cupboards...
make your kitchen look so overloaded...
messy no, dusty... well yes but just as any other shelf and dirty... the ones that are close to the cooking area... that is why I put things there we use a lot
:)

we have a white kitchen as well, and everything on display (that's what my mom says about it:)) and when the sun shines on the glass and all the things, it is just gorgeous!

ADOR the concept of them - but for practical use, i don't know if i could do it - i'm a neat freak, i dust literally everyday - my stuff is major organized, but to KNOW i HAD to be organized i'd have a panic attack!

I've had both. Open in my last house and no I didn't notice they gathered extra dust or anything. Enjoyed it and love the look. I have the opposite now, everything is tucked away and I'm enjoying it for now.

All my kitchen says about me is that I'm an unorganized mess with a wine problem ;)

Love these shelves!

They look great and are practical - why not?

I'd just have to remember to clean them if they're high!

i think that open shelves can definitely spruce up a room, but i can also see every container getting really dusty, really fast. :) still, it's a very cool look. hope you're well, dear!

i LOVE open shelving. i actually removed the boring doors off of half of my apartment's kitchen cabinets. granted, it is mostly dishes (i left the doors on my food-storing cupboards), but it doesn't get very messy. i have added a few of those amazing giant glass jars (crate & barrel!) for flour and sugar and coffee and such. i couldn't be happier with the space now. good luck!

I really love open shelves.. well as long as everything on them is neatly and attractively contained/organized :)

I haven't had open shelves in my kitchen before, but I imagine you'd need a step ladder to go with them. They sure are adorable, especially with those glass containers. loving them!! Happy Wednesday! xo

I love the look of open shelves, and have several in my living room. They are both functional and dust collectors!

I love the look in the picture! But for me I really don't like clutter so I think I would get tired of things not looking in order! xo

I love the open shelving! I hopw to have something similar when we move into a house!

Deidre said...

My only concern with open shelves is that things would fly off the end and then you'd have broken glass and granola every where.

Other than that, I think they are adorable. and maybe easier to clean?

Simply gorgeous! I've always had a dream to put open shelves in my future, dream house kitchen. Of course I'll have to get prettier dishware...but it'd be a nice problem to have :)

Thanks for the beautiful inspiration!

At the moment, I'm enduring my boyfriends ugly kitchen. For quite a while I've wanted to rip out the icky formica and do an open shelf look. I love it because you can be creative. Plus it serves as a way to show off all of your favorite plate sets, wine glasses, etc.
